The Big Five at Zuka: What to Expect from Each Species
Here is a closer look at what each species offers at Zuka.
Lion
Lions are present across the reserve. The open savanna habitat means sightings often happen in good light, giving you a clear view of pride behaviour.
Elephant
Elephants move through the reserve in family groups. Mixed woodland and grassveld give them room to forage widely. We offer the chance to encounter them on guided bush walks, at ground level.
Rhino
Both black and white rhinos live at Zuka.
White rhinos tend to graze in open areas and are generally approachable on game drives.
Black rhinos use denser bush and are more solitary, meaning that spotting one is quite a rare event. Our guides offer rhino notching (the process of microchipping rhinos) as an activity at an additional cost.
Buffalo
Buffalo herds gravitate toward water and move in large numbers. Their sheer size makes for dramatic sightings, particularly at the Twinspot hide, where you can sit eye-level with a water point.
Leopard
Leopards are nocturnal hunters and favour thicker riverine vegetation. Afternoon drives give you the best chance of catching one active before dark – though seeing them is quite rare.

Beyond the big five, the reserve carries a healthy cheetah population.
