What type of accommodation can I expect when booking with African Inspired Safaris?
We offer a wide range of safari accommodations that cater to diverse preferences and budgets. Our safari packages are all-inclusive, comprising meals (some with drinks) and guided game drives. Additional activities may be included or charged separately. The accommodation options range from adventure mobile safaris and cosy 3 & 4-star bush camps to luxurious high-end safari lodges that exude safari chic.
We do not offer camping sites or self-catering lodges.
For those seeking a varied itinerary that goes beyond the bush, we also provide midrange to high-end accommodation options in places like Cape Town, Garden Route, and areas around Kruger. These options include boutique hotels, owner-run bed and breakfasts, and meal-inclusive stays.
When should I start Planning?
To put it simply, it’s best to plan your African safari as early as possible. The demand for popular camps is high, and they tend to get booked out quickly. By starting your planning process sooner, you’ll have a wider range of safari accommodations to choose from. Ideally, booking 9-12 months in advance is recommended, especially if you plan to travel during school holidays. For larger groups of family and friends, we advise allowing at least 12 months. However, if you’re short on time, don’t worry, we’re experts at putting together last-minute safari holidays in a matter of days!
How does the planning process work?
We believe that every great journey starts with a conversation. We enjoy getting to know our clients and believe it’s important for you to get to know us too. Our aim is to establish a connection with you, understand your preferences, desires, and expectations, and customise your travel experience. To achieve this, we’ll ask a series of practical and creative questions that allow us to visualise your ideal vacation.
With your responses and our insider knowledge of Africa, we’ll develop multiple itinerary options tailored to you and present them in a personalised PDF document. We’ll continue to refine and enhance your travel schedule until it’s a perfect match for you.
Can I make changes to this initial itinerary?
Absolutely. We encourage you to be open about everything in the proposal – what you love and what you’re not sure about. The beauty of our service is that we’ll refine and tweak it until you’re 100% happy and ready to finalise your booking.
How many countries should I aim to visit?
At the heart of our philosophy is a focus on quality rather than quantity. We believe that it’s better to concentrate on one or two countries during your trip, in order to have a more enriching experience. This approach allows you to spend more time exploring each destination and enjoying its unique attractions and activities, rather than being constantly on the move between multiple places.
As specialists in Southern Africa, we highly recommend investing your time and resources in exploring one or two of these countries for the most rewarding experience possible
How much time should I allow for my safari holiday?
The length of your journey largely depends on the countries and regions you plan to visit, as Africa is vast! However, we generally recommend a minimum of seven to ten nights, especially if you’re travelling from a far-off destination. Typically, our clients travel for about two weeks, including flight time. We are committed to making the most of your time by carefully considering every aspect of your trip, including flights that avoid overnight stays in airport hotels. In some cases, you may travel between regions by light aircraft rather than road transfers. This is due to the remoteness of some areas and also because nothing compares to seeing Africa from an aerial perspective. Even your transfers will be a memorable part of your adventure!
How much does a safari holiday cost?
Determining the cost of your trip is a complex matter with many variables to consider, so it’s difficult to provide a straightforward answer. Factors such as your desired destinations, length of stay, preferred accommodation type, and included activities can all affect the overall cost. To provide you with the best possible holiday that fits your budget, chat to our safari experts and always enquire about your spending preferences upfront.
Do single supplements apply if I am a solo traveler?
At African Inspired Safaris we understand how frustrating (not to mention, expensive!) single supplements can be. Unfortunately most lodges charge a supplement which varies from lodge to lodge (this can be viewed in each lodge under the rates sections of the website) however there are those rare lodges that don’t charge single supplements at all.
When will my booking be confirmed?
Once we obtain written confirmation of your trip or tour, we will send you documentation containing an invoice and booking form. After we receive your deposit/or full payment and your completed booking form, we can confirm all arrangements and your accommodation.
Who Can Help With Flights?
We can help with all of your local and regional flights in and around Africa that help “stitch” your African holiday together.
When will I receive my travel documentation?
When you book with us your itinerary and any tickets for regional flights will be available immediately via email. Then, three weeks prior to your departure (as well as once full payment has been received), we’ll send you your full travel pack. This will include your day-by-day itinerary, vouchers, flight tickets, driving instructions (if you’re self-driving) and more.
Will I need a passport for my trip?
Most definately! A valid passport is required for every holiday booking. It is important to note that your passport should have a validity of at least six months beyond your scheduled return date. Additionally, make sure to have two blank pages in your passport for each country you plan to visit.
Do I need a visa?
Visa requirements vary for each country in Africa, so it’s important to check the specific visa regulations for each country you plan to visit.
Do I need to take any health precautions or vaccinations?
It is advisable to schedule an appointment with your GP or a travel specialist doctor at least two months prior to your departure to ensure adequate time for any required vaccinations and medication. Additionally, depending on your travel itinerary, your doctor may suggest other vaccinations, which are not mandatory, and it will be up to your discretion whether or not to take them. (Don’t forget to bring your itinerary with you to the appointment.)
Can we organize my travel insurance?
We’re here to assist you with every aspect of your vacation, and that includes travel insurance.
Is Africa suitable for kids?
Absolutely! Africa is an amazing destination for children, offering unparalleled opportunities to explore diverse cultures, stunning natural beauty, and remarkable wildlife. We highly recommend collaborating with our specialists to create a personalised itinerary for your family, which allows for flexibility and customization.
Are children able to go on safari?
The minimum age limit required to stay at a safari lodge or camp is determined by the property itself and varies from place to place. Generally speaking, children must be over six years old to participate in game drives. Some lodges do not accept children under a certain age group. Though there may be exceptions to this rule, particularly if you exclusively book out a lodge.
Are there facilities for children at safari lodges?
Some lodges cater towards children to keep them entertained and educated during their entire stay with dedicated staff and well-organised programmes. Activities may include: bush walks, mini game drives, insect safaris, arts & crafts, and cooking. Some lodges do not have any facilities for children and may even have minimum age requirements to stay there. In general, very young children are discouraged from participating in safaris.
Do I need to be fit?
To fully enjoy your African experience, it’s advisable to be in reasonably good health and capable of walking short distances without assistance. Africa offers an array of activities that can be physically demanding, and some regions may pose physical challenges. However, rest assured that there are ample opportunities for light physical activity and even wheelchair-accessible safaris for those who are not mobile.
Is there a dress code on safari?
Yes, there are certain clothing recommendations to consider when going on a safari.
First and foremost, it is important to dress comfortably and practically. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s recommended to wear layers that can be easily removed or added as needed. Neutral colours such as khaki, beige, and green are also recommended, as they blend in well with the natural surroundings and don’t attract unwanted attention from animals.
In terms of footwear, it’s important to wear sturdy and comfortable shoes or boots with good grip, as you may be walking on uneven terrain or in areas with thorny bushes. Avoid open-toed shoes, sandals, or flip-flops.
It’s also important to dress modestly and avoid bright or flashy colours, as they can disturb or startle the animals. Additionally, it’s recommended to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect against the harsh African sun, insects, bites and potential scratches from plants.
Overall, the goal is to blend in with the environment as much as possible and prioritise comfort and practicality over fashion.
If you plan to visit destinations like Cape Town or Victoria Falls, it may be appropriate to bring some smart casual outfits for evening wear. However, this is only necessary if you are travelling on a luxury train that requires smart attire and a jacket for dinner. If you prefer to pack light, you can still comply with the dress code by renting a jacket on the train with prior notice.
Will meals be included on my safari?
On most safaris all meals are included (it’s not like you can pop out to a restaurant, after all!), but arrangements for alcoholic beverages will vary depending on your package.
Can my special dietary requirements be catered for on Safari?
In general, most accommodations across Africa are capable of accommodating dietary restrictions and food allergies, as well as some religious restrictions, to a certain extent. We collect and document all of your dietary requirements in your booking form and share this information with all properties and partners on the ground to ensure that your needs are met. However, please be aware that certain lodges may not be able to accommodate extremely strict religious diets.
What power adaptors do I need for Africa?
Make sure to review the relevant country information provided in the countries need to know – travel advice section; as power availability can differ between areas. If you’re booked into a Eco friendly camp, electricity might not be available. Instead, you’ll have access to solar-generated hot water and hurricane lanterns. Not only does this setup create a beautiful and romantic ambiance, but it also aligns with the property’s commitment to sustainability and conservation efforts. Don’t worry, though – you can still charge your electronic devices in the main communal area. For those on a mobile safari, charging facilities will be accessible in the vehicles. We recommend photographers always bring spare batteries for their cameras, and a portable charger can be useful for smartphone users, particularly on extended safaris when taking numerous images and videos.
How do I protect myself against mosquitos?
It’s evident that avoiding mosquito bites is important, but it’s particularly crucial to steer clear of the ones that transmit malaria. These mosquitoes tend to bite between 9pm and 5am, so the most effective way to protect yourself is by covering up with a mosquito net from dusk until dawn. Many tents are sprayed in the evening, in addition to providing bug spray, so you’ll be well protected – both literally and figuratively! During the day, it’s advisable to wear long-sleeved tops and pants and use a reliable insect repellent. As always, prevention is better than cure, so we strongly recommend taking preventative measures to avoid getting bitten.
How do I protect myself against tsetse flies?
Tsetse flies are found in some parts of Africa. They are known to inhabit regions of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in areas where there is a significant presence of wildlife such as national parks and game reserves. Tsetse flies are best known for transmitting a parasitic disease called African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness, which can be fatal if left untreated. These insect-like creatures can inflict a painful bite! They are drawn to dark hues such as black, brown, and navy blue, as well as movement. In the event that you are targeted by one of these flies, it’s best to stay still and allow it to settle so that you can swat it. It is important to take necessary precautions, such as wearing protective clothing, using insect repellent, and avoiding bushy or wooded areas, to minimize the risk of being bitten by tsetse flies. (also advisable to bring along stingose or calamine lotion to treat any bites that may occur.)
Can I drink local tap water?
Although tap water is deemed safe in some of the countries we include in our coverage, such as South Africa and Namibia, we strongly suggest that you opt for bottled or filtered water instead. These are typically provided at most safari camps and lodges complimentary (not all), so feel free to indulge! In certain urban hotels, you may only receive complimentary bottles of water upon your arrival – beyond that, you’ll have to acquire them from the mini-bar (or beyond the premises), as is the case in many hotels worldwide.

How safe is South Africa for tourists?
Crime is a genuine issue in the larger cities, especially Johannesburg, but not so much in the game reserves, smaller towns and beach resorts that form the focal points of most South Africa safari trips. Follow local advice about safety and avoid walking around cities at night. We advise you not to carry large amounts of cash (visa, Mastercard, maestro cards are widely accepted as is apple pay) and make sure that your wallets and cellphones are not in your back pockets. With these simple tips, which you most likely use at home, you should be fine.
When is the best time to view wildlife and go to Africa?
The best time to view wildlife can depend on various factors, including the type of wildlife you want to see, the country and the location, and the time of year. Although you can have an incredible holiday in Africa at any time of the year. It all comes down to where you want to go and what you want to experience. We can suggest brilliant destinations for any time of year and help create the perfect itinerary for you.
Many animals are more active during early morning or late afternoon hours. This is when they tend to be feeding, and you may have a better chance of seeing them in action. Different seasons offer different wildlife viewing opportunities. For example, summers bring a multitude of beautiful migrant bird species and many newborn antelope species. Winters have limited water sources in areas in South Africa such as Greater Kruger which you will then find activity is generally around water holes. Wildlife viewing can be affected by weather conditions, such as rainfall. Some animals may be more active during certain weather conditions, while others may be less visible. The best time to view wildlife can vary depending on the location. For example, Botswana the best is in the winter season when there is no rain, however the flood plains are full from the rains up North in Angola. South Africa (northern area) in winter the bush is dry and there is less water so it is easier to spot animals as they congregate around fewer water sources.
What is the difference between a private concession and a National Park?
Wildlife concessions can either be privately owned and managed by an individual or company, or publicly owned and managed by the government, as is the case with national reserves. The choice between the two can greatly impact your safari experience. Although public reserves are typically cheaper, they tend to attract more visitors, resulting in a less exclusive and personalised experience compared to private concessions. Private concessions offer the advantage of off-roading and night-time game drives, which are not allowed in national parks open to the public and can become overcrowded during peak seasons.
Private concessions also provide a wider range of activities, including guided walks, cultural experiences, and hot air balloon rides, that may not be available in national parks. Additionally, lodging options in private concessions tend to be more luxurious and intimate, while national reserves offer a range of accommodation options, from camping sites to lodges. In a public reserve, you are restricted to gate opening and closing times, which can be inconvenient when trying to fully enjoy your safari experience.
What type of safari activities are there?
Safari lodges offer a wide range of activities that are designed to provide you with a unique and memorable experience of the African wilderness. The common activity at a traditional lodge are game drives but some camps also offer bush walks, mokoro safaris, boating safaris and even hot air balloon safaris and much more. Go check out the icons under each individual lodge on what they have on offer. If you are still not sure – chat to us!
What is an open safari vehicle?
A specially modified 4-wheel drive vehicle designed to carry between 4 and 10 guests used for wildlife safaris and outdoor excursions. The vehicles are equipped with high clearance for navigating rugged terrain, such as dirt roads, rocky paths, and shallow streams. Open safari vehicles are commonly used in national parks and game reserves in Africa and offer an immersive and intimate wildlife viewing experience, allowing passengers to get up close to animals (including the big 5) in their natural habitats.
It typically has an open top, with either a soft or hard canopy cover, and no windows or doors on the sides, allowing for unobstructed views of the surrounding scenery and wildlife.
Will I have a ranger/guide while on safari?
Once you arrive in camp, guides, staff and camp management will look after your every need. Safari guides (and in some cases also trackers) are specialists dedicated to ensuring your safari is effortless. No need to worry about logistics. You’ll be blown away by the care and attention you receive in the kind of safaris we sell.
What is a tracker?
A tracker is a person who is responsible for tracking and locating wildlife during your safari, within Africa. They possess specialised skills and knowledge of the terrain and animal behaviour, allowing them to identify tracks, scents, and other clues that lead to the sighting of animals in their natural habitats. Trackers work in collaboration with safari guides, who provide further interpretation of the wildlife and their behaviour, to ensure a safe and enriching safari experience for you. However, please note that not all lodges have trackers!
What is a walking safari?
A walking safari is a type of safari experience that involves exploring the wilderness on foot, accompanied by an experienced guide. Unlike a traditional safari where you stay in a vehicle and observe wildlife from a distance, a walking safari allows you to get up close and personal with the natural environment, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the ecosystem and its inhabitants.
During a walking safari, the guide will lead you through the wilderness, pointing out wildlife, birds, and plant life along the way. You may also have the opportunity to track animals, follow their footprints, and learn about their behavior and habitat.
Walking safaris can range from a few hours to several days, depending on the destination and the level of difficulty. They are typically conducted in small groups, with a maximum number of participants to minimize the impact on the environment and ensure safety. Walking safaris can be a thrilling and educational experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural world and appreciate the beauty and complexity of the ecosystem.
Do you need experience for a walking safari?
You do not necessarily need prior experience for a walking safari, as it is typically led by an experienced guide who will provide you with all the necessary training and information. However, it is recommended that you have a basic level of fitness and mobility, as walking safaris can involve walking for several hours a day over uneven terrain.
Before embarking on a walking safari, the guide will usually provide a safety briefing and explain the dos and don’ts, such as how to avoid disturbing wildlife or approaching dangerous animals. It is important to follow these guidelines and stay close to the guide at all times.
If you have any concerns about your fitness level or ability to participate in a walking safari, it is advisable to discuss this with your tour operator or the guide before booking the trip. They can advise you on the level of difficulty and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
Are walking safaris safe?
Walking safaris can be safe, provided that they are conducted by experienced guides who prioritise safety and follow strict protocols to minimise the risk of encountering dangerous animals. Walking safaris are typically conducted in areas where the wildlife is accustomed to human presence, and the guides are knowledgeable about the behaviour and habitat of the animals in the area.
However, it is important to remember that walking safaris take place in the wild, and there is always an element of risk involved. Wildlife can be unpredictable, and encounters with dangerous animals such as lions, elephants, and buffalo are possible. It is essential to follow the guide’s instructions and stay close to the group at all times.
To ensure the safety of participants, walking safaris are usually conducted in small groups, with a maximum number of participants. The guides are trained to recognize signs of danger and take appropriate action if necessary, such as using a rifle to deter an animal or leading the group to a safe location.
What is a mobile safari?
A mobile safari is a type of safari experience where you travel through a wilderness area, such as a national park or game reserve, staying in various temporary campsites along the way. It typically involves travelling in a specially designed safari vehicle or a combination of vehicles and other modes of transportation, such as boats or canoes.
Mobile safaris can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on the itinerary and the destination. The campsites used in mobile safaris are typically set up in remote locations, allowing you to explore areas that are not accessible by road or other means of transportation.
During a mobile safari, you will be accompanied by an experienced guide and a support team that includes chefs, drivers, and other staff. The guide will lead you on game drives and other activities, providing information about the wildlife, birds, and plant life in the area. You may also have the opportunity to participate in guided walks, cultural experiences, and other activities.
Mobile safaris provide a unique opportunity to explore different parts of a wilderness area, experiencing a variety of landscapes, habitats, and wildlife. They offer a more immersive and adventurous experience compared to a traditional lodge-based safari, allowing you to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty and complexity of the ecosystem.
What is a bucket shower?
In mobile or tented camps where permanent plumbing is not available, bucket showers are a common and environmentally friendly way to shower. As the name implies, this type of shower involves using a bucket to hold the water for washing. These showers are particularly useful in areas where water is scarce.
At most camps, there is a private en-suite shower stall within your tent, featuring a rainfall-style shower head that allows you to control the water flow. Outside the tent, a large waterproof bag or bucket is filled with around 10 to 15 litres (5 US gallons) of hot water, which is then raised using a pulley or rope system to either connect to the shower pipe or fill a cistern.
It’s important to use the water as soon as it arrives, as it will be at the ideal temperature. The camp staff usually fills the showers at a pre-arranged time, or you can give them a few minutes’ notice so they can get it ready. Despite the lack of traditional shower facilities, bucket showers provide plenty of hot water for a comfortable and refreshing wash.
