Lodge
Information
Sungulwane is an exclusive, Big 5 Safari lodge on Zuka Private Game Reserve. With just 8 private Suites, it’s the ultimate intimate African bush experience for you and a loved one, friends or the whole family.
Sit back, relax and sip on an ice-cold G&T while the 31000 hectares of the Conservancy envelopes you with its tall thickets, grassveld, savanna, thornveld and pockets of dense woodland. This Big Five game conservancy borders the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which is a world heritage site and authentically encapsulates the true spirit of Zululand.
Nestled into the game-rich Western Lebombo Mountains in Northern Zululand, lies Sungulwane Private Game Lodge. Inspired by the Zulu word for “the view of the eye” Sungulwane overlooks the exquisite, unspoiled wilderness of Zuka Private Game Reserve.
Sungulwane is a proudly family-run business. The farm is owned by John and Bruce Morrison, and the lodge is managed by their sons Rob, Mark and Nick. The Morrison’s have resided in the area for four generations and today they have realised their lifelong dream of transforming what was once an old hunting camp into the only privately owned boutique lodge in the Mun-ya-wana Big Five Conservancy.
Imagine a place where time stands still, where the gentle breeze rustles through the Red Ivory trees, the sun drops slowly beyond the horizon, the sky turns pink and the lions call. And all of this from the safety and sanctuary of your very own private balcony.
Zuka Private Game Reserve is an incredibly diverse conservation area boasting lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and leopard. Not to mention an abundance of prolific plains game including impala, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, nyala, bushbuck, giraffe and of course a plethora of birds. It’s particularly famous for its awe-inspiring cheetah sightings.
With moody hues, Sungulwane has a contemporary African design and architecture which is inspired by traditional African culture brought together by organic textures and shapes. Let Africa embrace you whether you are relaxing on a lounger by the pool, sipping on a glass of red wine while the flames dance in the firepit or enjoying a gourmet dining experience in the Boma… beneath the Milky Way.
Suites
Sungulwane has 8 suites consisting of 6 x 2-bed suites as well as 2 x 4-bed family units all complete with outside showers. One group/family are welcome to book the entire lodge therefore transforming Sungulwane into a real home away from home.
Each suite is embedded into the thick Red Ivory forest giving you the feeling of sleeping in the tree canopies – in complete harmony with nature.
An extensive private deck with large stack back doors and showers allow for endless stargazing or daydreaming over the uninterrupted views of the valley.
Dining
All meals and selected spirits, beers and wines are included in your stay at Sungulwane. So why not sit back, relax and take in the essence of the African bush that surrounds you. Whether it’s starting your day with a delicious Cappuccino or unwinding with your own in-room massage… Sungulwane offers warm, friendly Zululand hospitality at its best.
Safari
At Sungulwane your day is entirely your own. Whether you choose to watch the sunrise over the mountains, take a leisurely bush walk through the savanna or sit in peace in your very own bird hide… the adventures on offer are endless. Game drives, starlit bush dinners and informative photographic safaris are just a few more activities that are on offer. As the lodge only caters for a maximum of 16 guests – each experience is bespoke and unique and will remain etched in your memory forever.
The experience of a lifetime – game drives at Sungulwane give you the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Africa and see wildlife in their natural surroundings.
Their experienced guides share their knowledge and passion with you on twice daily game drives, bringing the flora and fauna to life; not only do you see sightings of Africa’s Big 5 but the other iconic species such as Giraffe, Zebra and Hippo.
When you book a private vehicle and specialist guide; safaris can be tailor-made to suit you. Whether you want to focus on birds, photography, family safaris or take things a little slower to enjoy every aspect of this wild environment, each experience is unique.
A bush walk offers a truly immersive experience, being on foot in a Big 5 reserve without the protection of a car. A guided bush walk gives you the opportunity to learn about tracks, flowers, insects and the smaller things you miss being on a vehicle.
Being able to smell and touch what is at your feet with the possibility of observing wildlife to a very short distance. The thrill of not knowing what is around the next bend and surrounding yourself in nature is something we highly recommend.
