Set in the Olifants West Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger open system, Sausage Tree Safari Camp is ideally positioned for exceptional Big Five wildlife encounters.

Sausage Tree is a small and intimate luxury tented camp, surrounded by African wilderness and offering spectacular views towards the Northern Drakensberg Mountains. The camp accommodates a maximum of just 10 guests across three Superior Safari Tents and two newly enhanced Luxury Tented Suites, creating a relaxed and highly personal safari experience.

The Olifants River flows year-round through the reserve, supporting healthy populations of hippo and crocodile, as well as an impressive diversity of bird species, including the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.

The energetic team is highly experienced, dedicated and passionate, with genuine attention to detail throughout your stay. From Pitso and Kabelo’s outstanding cuisine to the welcoming front-of-house team’s personal service, local knowledge and friendliness, guests can expect warm hospitality and a relaxed atmosphere.

The camp features indoor and outdoor lounge areas and a cosy bar stocked with a variety of first-class South African wines, craft beers and local gin. The refreshing swimming pool, set into the wooden deck, is the perfect place to cool down on warm summer days and relax between game drives.

For those looking to unwind, the private spa area overlooks the surrounding bush and offers a range of massages and treatments.

The camp is now solar powered and offers Wi-Fi, although guests are encouraged to embrace the tranquillity of the bush and keep mobile phones on silent during their stay.

Suites

Sausage Tree Safari Camp offers five intimate accommodation units, comprising three Superior Safari Tents and two Luxury Tented Suites, accommodating a maximum of 10 guests.

The camp’s elevated position provides wonderful views across the surrounding bushveld and towards the Northern Drakensberg Mountains, while the private decks create a peaceful place to relax between safari activities.

Superior Safari Tents

The three Superior Safari Tents have recently been upgraded to provide a more refined and spacious safari experience while retaining the authentic romance of sleeping under canvas.

Each tent features sliding glass doors with insect screens, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding bush. The tents have an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and outdoor shower, air conditioning, a fan and tea and coffee facilities.

Each Superior Safari Tent has its own private deck overlooking the African bush and Drakensberg Mountains, with individually themed interiors adding to the character of the accommodation.

Luxury Tented Suites

The two Luxury Tented Suites offer additional space and flexibility and are particularly well suited to couples looking for a romantic safari escape or families travelling with young children.

Leopard Tortoise Suite features a king-size bed which can also be configured as a twin, together with a comfortable lounge area. The sofa can be converted into a sleeper sofa for younger children.

Rhino Beetle Suite features an extra-length queen-size bed and a spacious lounge area with a sleeper sofa suitable for younger children.

Both Luxury Tented Suites have en-suite bathrooms with freestanding baths and outdoor showers, air conditioning and spacious private decks overlooking the surrounding bush.

The suites are an excellent option for guests wanting a little more space while retaining the intimate, under-canvas character that makes Sausage Tree special.

Dining

Breakfast and lunch are social affairs and are served on the open deck with uninterrupted views of the bush and a water hole frequented by a variety of animals. Dinner is mostly served under the stars, around the fire in our traditional styled ‘Boma’. The camp has an indoor and outdoor lounge and a cosy bar complete with a variety of first class South African wines and a selection of South African craft beer and gin.

Safari

Experience 360-degree panoramic views from their open vehicles while in search of a variety of wildlife, negotiating valleys, hills and plains which provide some of the most spectacular views in the whole of the Lowveld in over 3,500 hectares of traversing.

Their guide and tracker teams will not only find you incredible animal sightings but will interpret what you see with fun filled facts, underpinned by their exhaustive knowledge, passion and respect for nature thereby making certain your Safari experience is an authentic one.

Each morning and late afternoon, an experienced, professional guide and tracker will take you on a safari game drive through thick bush and along open plains in search of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) as well as a myriad of birds and game species such as giraffe, zebra, warthog, kudu and impala.

Sundowners will be served with tasty snacks watching the sun set over the African bush. During the drives there is a lot of emphasis on giving information on everything that is encountered – whether your interest is birding, insects, plants or trees, your guide will happily share his knowledge with you. Their guides also focus on some of the less noticeable aspects of the bush.
