ABOUT
Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris
Why This
Inspires Us
- For those walking enthusiasts out there – undoubtedly, this is an experience that should not be missed! Nothing beats the thrill of walking in the wild as you never know what is around the next bush! (We had incredible encounters on foot, mere 100 meters away from us!) A great experience to get closer to nature and experience Kruger on a different level!
- This intimate trails camp is situated in the heart of the game-rich area of the Kruger (which shares an unfenced boundary with renowned Mala Mala and Sabi Sands reserves!) Comprising 4 Tents, no wifi & no cell phone signal – this gives you the opportunity to really immerse yourself in nature! (What can be better from escaping everyday life?)
- Plains Camp offers a scenic view of the active watering hole and vast Timbertene Plains! We found the plunge pool is the best spot where you can unwind and observe wildlife as they come to drink!
- We love sleeping under the stars and here we got to experience a unique opportunity with the “Sleep Out platforms”, providing an unforgettable evening immersed in the African Skies! (In fact, these elevated wooden platforms, situated 4 meters above the ground, are exclusive to the Kruger region).
- An excellent suggestion is to merge luxury accommodations and game drives at Rhino Post and Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris, with the immersive and intimate on-foot experience.
- Flying into Skukuza Airport grants convenient proximity, as Rhino Post Lodge (the base camp) is merely a 30-minute game drive away, ensuring effortless accessibility.

Lodge
Information
Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an intimate trails camp in the heart of South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park. Located on the Mutlumuvi concession in the Kruger National Park, half an hour’s safari game drive from Skukuza Airport. The concession consists of 12 000 hectares of wilderness area just inside the un-fenced western boundary that separates the Kruger from the Mala Mala and Sabi Sand Game reserves.
Guests are privileged to exclusively the private concession on foot in ‘Big 5 territory’ that was not previously open to the public. Experience Africa’s wildlife – its sights, sounds, scents and textures on foot or spend a night under the stars at their Sleep-Out decks and immerse yourself in nature.
Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is not your ordinary Kruger Park camp. Their exclusive lodge offers two of the most unforgettable and adventurous activities – walking safaris through the park and the option to sleep-out in tents on wooden decks. Either way, you are guaranteed an experience of a lifetime.
While approximately 2 million travellers per year visit the Kruger National Park, very few have the opportunity of experiencing wilderness areas that are not open to the general public let alone have the privilege of doing so on foot. Their expert guides take massive pleasure in sharing this extraordinary honour with nature lovers and adventurers alike.
The main buildings consist of a spacious wooden deck and firepit with a stylish but straightforward dining tent with white linen and silverware and a lounge furnished with super comfortable leather couches, deep chairs and an honesty bar from which to help yourself.
Between walks which take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, take pleasure in the solitude of a hidden camp. The camp is built from canvas and wood with beautiful antiques and silverware giving it the elegance of a bygone era. Overlooking the Timbetene Plain where plains game roams freely, and elephants are seen daily. This positioning allows guests to enjoy unhindered views of animals grazing and interacting without being noticed.
The bar is stocked with water, soft drinks, beers, spirits and liqueurs. Water, soft drinks, beers and house wines are included in the rate and Cellar wines may be ordered from their sister lodge, Rhino Post Safari Lodge. Enjoy sitting in the shade, sipping on a gin and tonic and watching elephants slake their thirst at the reservoir and trough where water is pumped daily.
On a hot day, take a dip in the plunge pool and relax on a lounger enjoying a cold beer or iced cold drink all the while keeping an eye out for passing wildlife. On a Winter evening, bundle up warmly and toast your toes around the fire, sip on a hot chocolate or coffee with a kick and listen for the echo of hyenas whooping, or lions roaring in the distance.
Suites
Four stylishly appointed en-suite explorer-style tents are perfectly nestled in the shade of a Knobthorn cluster each accommodating two persons in twin beds.
Far removed from civilisation, Plains Camp is well positioned for exclusivity and adventure.
After experiencing unfettered wildlife in ‘Big 5 territory’ guests get to come back to a comfortable inviting beds made of white percale linen and soft bamboo throws making bedtime dreamy.
The screened en-suite bathroom has a toilet, brass shower and basin with hot running water. Each suite has its own private deck with Adirondack chairs overlooking the Timbetene plain where you can relax and enjoy the African wilderness on your doorstep.

High tea is served in the late afternoon, followed by a short walk, sundowners in the bush and a game drive, returning after dark with spotlights with the opportunity to view nocturnal animals on the prowl.
Share drinks and stories around the fire before a delicious dinner with a South African twist. Enjoy meals and fireside chats with your guide who is hospitable, well-educated and extremely experienced, and takes great pleasure in sharing this special place with you.
Safari
Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an activity-based destination. They specialise in wilderness walking safaris led by dedicated guides with years of experience and training. With a maximum of eight people – over the age of 12 – per walk, guests are accompanied by two armed guides as you explore all the wonder and intrigue the Kruger has to offer.
Plains Camp is not about a variety of activities; it is about the incredibly liberating experience of immersing oneself in nature and the astounding biodiversity of the Kruger National Park.
Walking safaris have become a much sought-after activity – the ultimate way to experience nature first hand. For the enthusiasts, they recommend a full-length walking safari as you experience nature intimately, using all five of your senses. Marvel at the miracles of nature: from the fascinating minutiae of insect life, vibrant birds, and the fragrance of wild herbs to the adrenalin injecting exhilaration of colossal animals and sinewy predators as nature intended.
Early morning walking trails depart the camp at sunrise, either on foot, or driving out to an area hand-picked by your guide, and then walking from there. You will walk accompanied by two armed guides who have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
Enjoy tracking animals, identifying spoor, dung and plants, learning about animal behaviour and the medicinal and traditional cultural uses of various plants and trees. Make the most of photographic opportunities, bird watching and all the while keeping an eye out for general game and predators.
Stop to study the small things, smell and taste wild herbs, and enjoy refreshments in the shade of a tree.
Until you have walked in big game territory, it is hard to conceive the actual height of a giraffe, or just how enormous, silent and gentle an elephant really is. It is also a heart-stopping privilege to round a corner and surprise sleeping lions or buffalo grazing.
Return on time for a hearty brunch, followed by a swim, nap or time spent spying on nature from the comfort of the camp.
