ABOUT

Biyela Lodge

Why This

Inspires Us

  • Five descendants of King Shaka’s Chiefs have given tribal land to increase the capacity of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and this is how Biyela Lodge got its name – Phiwayinkosi Biyela, a descendent and local chief of King Shaka! (We love the fact the area is steeped in Zulu culture, tradition, and history!)
  • The lodge is built into the hillside, perfectly positioned to enjoy the amazing sweeping of the White iMfolozi River below – enjoying a gin and tonic while relaxing in your own plunge pool (bonus in the hot summer) with your loved one is not only hard to beat but so romantic! .
  • Each villa boasts an oasis of privacy and eco-luxury with a modern lounge, dining area and an awesome outside shower!
  • Scenic landscapes, flowing rivers and riverine thickets make game drives and bushwalks all the more enjoyable (even if you don’t see any wildlife!) In fact, even the bird diversity is attracted by the wide variety of habitats in the area!

Safari

With two daily ‘Big 5’ game drives a day, you will leave having had an authentic African Wilderness experience.

mFulaWozi and surrounds are home to a rich diversity of wildlife including the ‘Big 5’ – Black & Southern White Rhinoceros, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Lion and Leopard. Other intriguing species you can encounter, include skilled hunting packs of African Wild Dog, curious Honey Badgers, cheeky and daring Spotted Hyena, graceful Giraffe, Nile Crocodiles faking somnambulance in the sun, and scurrying mongooses.

As one of the last havens of large numbers of ungulates and the predators they support, this Big 5 game reserve is one of the most important conservation areas in South Africa.
