Abelana Game Reserve is a 15,000ha (36,000 acre) Big Five game reserve adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park and the Selati Game Reserve, near the city of Phalaborwa in South Africa’s lovely Lowveld – the country’s main big game region.
Owned by the Mashishimale community, the word “abelana” means “to share amongst each other” in the local Northern Sotho language.
This spirit of sharing underpins the connection among the Mashishimale and its lodge operations partner which leases the land for eco-tourism purposes.
Characterised by spectacular landscapes, various topography and a combination of vegetation types, Abelana Game Reserve has a 10km stretch of the semi-perennial Selati River in its northern section, in addition to several different seasonal rivers..
This stylish newly renovated 20 room lodge offers stunning views of the Serati River
The main area at the lodge has a swimming pool that overlooks the river and boasts both indoor and outdoor dining areas. As well as a bar, a lounge and fire pit for sharing safari experiences and sightings in the evenings.
This is home to a variety of fauna and flora. From the hippos and crocodiles that make the Selati River their home to the famed Big Five – Elephant, Rhino, Leopard, Lion and Buffalo. In addition to Cheetah and Wild Dog which are occasional visitors to the area. There are a variety of bird species including the African Fish Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Thick-billed Cuckoo, and Bat Hawk.

Walking Safaris are the most authentic way to experience the African bush. Only on foot can one stop being an observer and become part of the environment, truly absorbing the uniqueness of your surroundings and all the smaller elements that make up the broader ecosystem. A walk in the bush will make you feel like you belong to something much bigger than yourself.
